Vision & Mission

Vision

Our vision is that the Indigenous peoples of the Nicaraguan Moskitia will be able to achieve adequate living conditions and progressively improve their quality of life from a traditional perspective while perserving their ancestral knowledge and cultural values.

Mission

The mission of the Pro-Moskitia Foundation is to promote, support and direct projects and action strategies that contribute to the achievement of a comprehensive and sustainable level of development for the indigenous peoples of the Nicaraguan Moskitia. We intend to implement projects in a way that strengthens the individual and collective skills of its inhabitants, drawing on their ancestral cooperative practices in systems of production, administration of existing resources, community organization and gender relations, while respecting cultural diversity and incorporating the use of new technologies.

Objectives & Methodology

Our objectives are to promote self-development through projects that positively affect the conditions of life and of the natural environment, helping to reduce the extreme poverty of the communities while protecting the environment,

To strengthen the processes of culturally appropriate development that guarantees equal opportunities to the poorest sectors,

To raise visibility of the participation of women in community development through the facilitation of mechanisms and strategies that ensures their full incorporation in decision-making and the implementation of initiatives,

To diminish the vulnerability of the region to natural disasters and to offer our support and solidarity during emergencies,

And to overcome the paternalism and dependency on aid among the communities that has been promoted by government institutions and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

The Pro-Moskitia Foundation of Nicaragua (PMF) provides technical, material and financial support for strategies, projects and actions that contribute to the integrated development and sustainability of indigenous and other economically disadvantaged peoples. Our support and services are offered in a manner that respects local cultural traditions and improves the ability of families and communities to provide for their own basic needs, including but not limited to, clean water, housing, food, health care, education and employment.

Pro-Moskitia Foundation of Nicaragua (PMF) has its headquarters in Austin, Texas, USA, and implements its projects primarily in the indigenous communities of the municipalities of Puerto Cabezas and Waspam in Nicaragua's North Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN), in Port Arthur in Texas; Panama City, Panama and in San José, Costa Rica.

PMF's strategy is to coordinate its work with that of other organizations that promote the quality of life and whose work has a visible and positive impact on the inhabitants. Our vision includes the active involvement of community leaders in the realization of projects, encouraging them to appropriate the process and prioritize their needs, presenting their own initiatives and eventually acquiring the capacity to be the agents of their own development. To this end, we develop our work by valuing the local knowledge held by communities while trying to the extent possible to avoid the introduction of methodologies and forms of thought alien to the culture of these peoples.
